Why Botanical, The Human Position, is a book about collective imagery.

Why Botanical, The Human Position, takes inspiration from Takuma Nakahira’s Why an Illustrated Botanical Dictionary? (1973). Unlike Nakahira’s resistance to interpretation, this book embraces speculation and the formation of collective memory. It invites projection, association, and recognition.

Focusing on the form of trunks, the texture of bark, and the veins of leaves, Why Botanical, The Human Position draws parallels between trees and humans. Through mirrored images, botanical elements begin to resemble the human figure. As viewers unfold the book, literally and metaphorically, they become active participants in assembling meaning. Faces emerge. So do taboos, expressions, gestures, faiths, everything that reflects what it means to be human.
